Continuous and accurate positioning has become one of the essential requirements in the field of intelligent transportation and navigation systems. The Internet of Things (IoT), by providing a communication infrastructure among smart objects, plays a key role in the development of modern vehicle tracking systems. In this study, a software-based vehicle tracking system was designed and implemented using the MQTT messaging protocol and the four-layer TCP/IP network model under the Android operating system. The proposed system consists of three main components: a central server, a client application, and an administrator application. The client app determines the vehicle’s location through satellite navigation and cellular positioning, then transmits the data to an MQTT broker hosted on the server. The MQTT broker establishes a communication bridge between the client and the administrator, stores the received data in a database, and transmits it to the administrator app for real-time visualization on the map.
Field experiments conducted in two environments with low and high multipath conditions demonstrated positioning accuracies, in terms of RMSE, of 1.418 meters and 2.337 meters respectively for 1,000 samples. The system is entirely software-based, and the experimental results confirm its efficiency in improving positioning accuracy, eliminating dependency on dedicated hardware, reducing implementation costs, and ensuring stable software-based network communications.
